Paths to Success - Featuring Nan Smith of Stone Cliff Winery

Nan was raised in Dubuque, Iowa and went to the University of Colorado where she obtained her nursing degree and practiced for a number of years in the CCU, ICU and ER at the University of Colorado. She met her future husband, a business executive in Denver, married and together they had two daughters. All seemed ideal until one day Bob revealed he wanted to retire and return to his “roots.” “But Honey, your roots are farming! I am a city girl! “ After several years of searching for the “perfect

farm” they found it in Durango, Iowa, close to her family in Dubuque. Routine farming was short lived and grape vines were soon planted.

Nan started attending wine making classes, and making wine. Today they have the second largest winery in Iowa, producing 40,000 gallons of wine a year for their 900 customers. Their winery, Stone Cliff, as well as their event room and tasting room is located in the Port of Dubuque in the historic Star Brewery Building. It is the host to numerous events - week day lunches by their award winning chef, live music and entertainment on weekends, weddings, and receptions.
